When we decided to renovate a room, we first thought about painting the walls. This is one of the things that changes a place the most, so we plunged into the world of wall paintings. We find many colors, but also textures and finishes that can be interesting, including Venetian plaster.

Venetian plaster is a finish that we give to the walls and that imitates marble, making it a way to give distinction and luxury to our walls. It is a very old technique and it was the Venetian masters of the Renaissance who made the most of this type of technique to decorate the walls. So let’s see how it is done and where it will be better.

Venetian plaster

This technique is called venetian marble plaster because it was in the upper class villas of Venetian Renaissance society that it had its greatest splendor. Today this finish is simply imitated to give the walls a distinguished and elegant touch in various shades and with a smooth and shiny texture that makes it look like marble. Without a doubt it is a very special effect to decorate the walls that can completely change them.

Materials to make Venetian plaster

To make the Venetian plaster we need some materials. In general we have materials that we would use to paint normally, such as furniture protectors, bodybuilder tape for certain areas and sandpaper. But in this case we will also need a trowel to apply the stucco and a spatula. Venetian plaster can be purchased made in the color that we like, although it is also possible to mix the stucco with a tint that we want, and we can do it ourselves or ask us to do it in the store if we are not sure how to make the mixture.

Steps to make Venetian plaster

Apply stucco

The first thing we must do is check that the wall is in good condition to be able to apply the stucco, as in all the walls that we are going to paint. You have to clean it to remove dust, and wait until it is dry. If there are imperfections we can use putty to cover them and sand and clean so that the finish is perfect. It is also necessary to cover with the bodybuilder tape places such as the edges of the door or the plinth.

Once the walls are prepared, if we still do not have the tone prepared, we must mix the stucco with the stain in a stucco bucket and simply stir until the desired color is achieved and that it is well mixed. When we have the mixture we must start applying the stucco with the trowel more or less uniformly in the first layer, trying to make it smooth. You have to wait the indicated drying time and use the spatula to remove imperfections or sandpaper.

Conclusion

You should apply another second coat in the same way, trying to make it even and allowing it to dry for a day. Remove the imperfections in the same way and finally get ready to apply the last coat. This is the most complicated, because in it we are going to make that effect of marble veins. You have to apply it irregularly, leaving gaps without filling.
